"Exemplary structure with a seductive texture, there is excellent focus and power, yet the wine reveals such finesse, elegance and a knife-edge balance…So much to love about this wine. 98 Points."
"The naturally supple, juicy red berry fruits mood of Magill Estate loves the brightness and definition of the cool seasons, and the later ripening 2022 vintage has delivered another standout. I live its juicy, fruity core and its seamless synergy with fine-grained tannins and intricately gauged, milk chocolate French and American oak. The result is both effortlessly amicable and yet enduringly age-worthy. One of the greats in the Magill Estate lineage. 96 Points."
"Magill Estate has slowly been putting on weight over recent times, filling out what had been sharp angles and building more fat and sinew. This is a good thing. The role of new oak, both French and American, seems to be slowly decreasing, too, as witnessed in the ’22 which allows for greater fruit expression and an overall more welcoming wine experience. Yes, bottle age is on the wine’s mind and that of the winemaker in the delivery of the ’22, but just look at what can be enjoyed earlier: florals to the fore in aromas of violet and acacia fashioned around ripe black berries and plums. The intensity level is dialled up on a palate rich in spiced-fuelled flavours of black fruits, cinnamon, allspice, clove, dark chocolate, vanilla pod, bay leaf and smoky char. Strikes a well-structured pose throughout, finishing with a lingering trail of memorable spice. 95 Points."
A cooler season delayed vintage at Penfolds Magill Estate winery, allowed slow ripening to enchance fine Shiraz characters, with the terroir of this unique vineyard shining through strongly.
– Matt Woo, Penfolds Red Winemaker
Lustrous, dark purple core.
A complex mosaic that begins with distinct liquorice and rosemary aromatics. Notes of pan scrapings introduce savoury undertones that provide a counterpoint to the aromas of dark berries and plums. Notes of violet, lavender, and rosemary flowers deliver an elegant perfume. Nutty layers of hazelnuts and almond biscotti are present, while cola and dried bay leaves add depth. The scent of plum pudding ties everything together with a final touch of richness.
Raspberry and blueberry meld together, infused with a velvety chocolate richness. The balance achieved here is striking; every element is poised with precision. Grippy tannins lend structure, akin to fine cocoa powder dusting. Tiramisu finished with shaved chocolate garnish. Mineral acidity provides an undercurrent that carries these flavours forward. Hazelnut husk-like tannins complete the profile, leaving a lasting impression.
The 2022 Magill Estate vintage was shaped by a year of climatic generosity, beginning with above-average rainfall in winter and spring. Contrary to the disruptive La Niña effects elsewhere, South Australia remained mostly unaffected. Despite lower-than-typical rainfall in August and September, October brought abundant falls that set Magill Estate on course for success. A late-October thunderstorm peppered the Adelaide region with hail, but fortunately, Magill Estate emerged unscathed. Summer was characterised by mildness, with temperatures exceeding 35°C on only three occasions and never surpassing 40°C—creating an environment conducive to slow and steady grape maturation. This resulted in veraison occurring a month later than typical, which in turn delayed harvest until March 10th and 17th. The additional hang time on the vine proved advantageous as it fostered exceptional flavour development marked by ripe tannins and finely tuned acidity.

The historic Penfolds Magill Estate is one of the few single vineyards in the world located within city boundaries. First planted in 1844. at its peak in 1949, then planted to several varieties, the vineyard covered 120 hectares. First produced in 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz is distinctly different to the mainstream Penfolds style, showing intense floral/ blackberry/ aniseed aromas, smooth richness and a ‘long spine’.
