Cellar Reserve
Chief Winemaker Peter Gago introduced the Cellar Reserve project in the mid-1990s to provide a space for the Penfolds winemaking team to uninhibitedly explore all reaches of their craft.
This creative playground produces alternative, experimental or one-off bottles, which are highly sought-after by wine collectors, cellar door visitors and fine wine specialists with a penchant for the road less travelled. Over the years, this has included fiano, mataro, sangiovese, gewürztraminer and viognier, as well as more well-known varietals such as shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir and chardonnay.
These releases emerge periodically when experimental wines, which have been nurtured carefully in the winery cellars, are deemed appropriate for public release. The wines do not necessarily fit into any particular genre and provide Penfolds winemakers with the freedom to strive for new styles and definitions of excellence in their expression.
