"The two personalities play with each other in interesting ways, as bright red fruit notes of plum and mulberry are tempered by a more drawn-out savoury edge to sooty blackcurrant. It’s a rounded, cohesive package that finishes tightly and is built for ageing. 95 points."
"This is a French and Australian combination with fruit from Bordeaux and Coonawarra. The French component gets 12 months in oak and the Australian 18 months. The total new oak contribution is 84%. Aromas of leaf and blackcurrant with traces of minerals and ironstone. A little graphite edges in, balancing the primary bright red fruits of raspberry. Palate has a distinctly minerally feel with grainy tannins heightening. The graphite character reveals strongly here with some dried herbs as well. This is a classy wine – 95 points."
Deep magenta. Opaque at core.
Brooding. A saturation of black fruits (predominantly blackcurrant/cassis with some rosehip, damson) meshed with wafts of black olive tapenade, prosciutto/salami. A heady perfume of garrigue. What about star anise, musk?! A propulsion of an amalgam of molasses/treacle/golden syrup lookalikes — speaks more to concentration. Fruit jelly would ordinarily speak more to Merlot than Cabernet… but no Merlot here! An initial impression of char and soot / ground charcoal gives way to more familiar Cabernet descriptors of graphite and cigar box upon sitting.
Immediately seduced by exotic yet restrained fruits — primarily fresh blackcurrant, boysenberry, mulberry. Granularity and a tannic grip complements density of palate. These mouthwatering tannins are not quite Italian, but geographically heading that way. A minerality apparent, with a quartz/granite heaviness. Appealing polished oak, coupled with a graphite element, affording a subtle conveyance to the back palate.
The 2022 Bordeaux vintage was defined by a warm and dry growing season, making it a complete contrast to the challenging 2021 season. The vines thrived in the warm weather, surprising many with their resilience. Across the region, producers reported sublime, balanced wines with remarkable freshness and vitality. A vintage for the history books. South Australia’s spring was cooler than average, leading to isolated frost events. Coonawarra felt this chill with nine days below 2°C during spring and a record low of -0.3°C in early September. However, strategic use of frost fans effectively shielded the vines from harm. November saw the arrival of warmer conditions, providing optimal conditions for flowering and fruit-set. Veraison was uniform across our vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon was able to complete ripening under ideal conditions. Another stellar vintage for Australia’s premiere Cabernet Sauvignon region.

The inaugural French release in 2022 was led by a wine made in partnership with one of Bordeaux’s most respected winemaking Houses, Dourthe Bordeaux. The elegance of French cabernet meets the depth and power of South Australian shiraz. This first release included two wines; Dourthe x Penfolds II Cabernet Shiraz and FWT (French Winemaking Trial) 585 Cabernet Merlot Petit Verdot.
